Opponents of new union law rally in Ohio's capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thousands of people seeking to repeal Ohio's new collective bargaining law are rallying at the Statehouse and promising to remember the fight over the measure when they choose which candidates to support in future elections.

The gathering Saturday was organized by the We Are Ohio campaign, which bills itself as a grass-roots, bipartisan group. It's signing up people to circulate petitions in pursuit of a referendum on the measure that was signed recently by Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik).

The law applies to more than 350,000 public workers. It bans them from striking, restricts bargaining and eliminates binding arbitration.

Kasich has said his $55.5 billion, two-year state budget proposal counts on unspecified savings from lifting union protections to help fill an $8 billion hole.

Opponents call the measure an attack on working families.
