15 Ways to Go Green without Spending a Penny

1. Put those car keys down and give walking a go.

Whether it is to work, the school run or simply to the shops, walking has a host of health benefits as well as being good for the environment.

2. Make sure you recycle tin cans, bottles and paper by using the containers the government provides.

This means materials can be used again and again rather than taking up space in a landfill.

3. Save the money you would normally spend on fruit and vegetables in the supermarket and set up a patch in your garden.

If everyone did this transport costs of goods would be reduced, as would emissions.

6. Ever turned your heating thermostat up ‘just in case’?

By turning your thermostat down a degree or two you will save energy and probably not notice the difference in temperature!

7. If you are able to, try and make use of the natural daylight more often.

If you get up when the sun comes up and go to bed when it goes down you can eliminate the use for lighting almost completely! Maybe a bit extreme but nevertheless one very easy way to reduce your electricity.

8. All the major washing detergent brands are trying to encourage us to go green by reducing our washing temperature to 30 degrees, yet many of us are still washing at 40 or more.

These days washing powder formulas are made to cope with lower temperatures and our clothes will still come out sparkling clean!

9. On the subject of washing clothes don’t rely on the tumble dryer to get your clothes dry for that special occasion.

Get organized, wash your clothes in plenty of time and hang them out on the line to dry or on a clotheshorse inside.

10. If the thought of walking from one place to the next brings you out in a cold sweat, get on your bike and cycle instead.

As well as being fantastic exercise it also reduces the amount of cars on the road.

11. It’s a habit many of us have and do without thinking but remembering to turn off the tap while brushing your teeth is one of the easiest ways to go green.

12. Before running to turn the heating up take a look at what you’re wearing.

If you have thin clothing on, chances are you are going to be a little chilly. By putting on an extra layer you will be nice and snug and save power.

13. If you do have to use your car to get around make sure you drive efficiently by not revving too high and make sure the air in your tires is set at the correct pressure.

Both help in driving more economically and therefore saves petrol. Yes really!

14. If walking or using your bike on your daily commute isn’t possible why not car share with a friend who is going the same way?

Ask your colleagues at work or the mums in the playground and start saving the environment and money today.

15. Spread the word!

By passing on these tips and encouraging your friends and family to go green, hopefully we can all make a difference, which will go someway in helping preserve this amazing planet that we live on.
