The range of explanations is fascinating: everything from "we were ordered to", to "it's patriotic", to "it makes my magic potion work". It's hard to understand how anyone can possibly think that way, but then you look at some of the things we've done (we being the US) in the name of patriotism and you wonder if we're so different. Not that we perpetrate mass rape, but still, the analogy holds (wiretapping, coups, backing brutal repressive regimes -- all happens in the defense of the United States).
The hardest thing to believe, though, is that the situation in the Congo has been ignored for so long.
