4% of all the people in the world are US citizens, 25% of all the prisoners in the world are US citizens

Inmates in US prisons are forced to do work for private US companies for as little as $0/hour, under threat of solitary confinement.
Most prisons in the US are privately, not publicly, owned, and therefor turn a profit through government contracts (the money they take from you in taxes). They stand to be more profitable as the US prison population escalates, and as such they spend millions of dollars lobbying on capitol hill for legislation that will increase the prison populations.
